Description

The Seiko Presage Classic Series Craftsmanship — Urushi Lacquer Dial (HCC006J) is the first watch in the Presage Craftsmanship lineage to render the Laurel heritage design in 漆 (urushi) — Japan's ancient lacquer tradition, practised continuously for over 9,000 years and still produced today by artisans who measure their craft in decades of mastery. The deep black urushi dial is not coated or printed. It is built up through successive layers of lacquer application and polishing — 塗りと研ぎ (nuri to togi), applied and polished, applied and polished again, until the surface achieves the specific depth and sheen that only urushi can produce. The result is a black that is not flat but infinite — a surface that seems to recede behind the glass, drawing the eye inward. Supervised by lacquer artist Tamura Isshu — creator of the world's finest Kaga Makie lacquerwork, whose techniques appear on luxury fountain pens and watches globally — and produced by Echizen lacquer craftsmen Tsuji Toshikazu and Tsuji Mitsuki, who combine Echizen's 1,500-year-old lacquer tradition with Tamura's precision Kaga Makie technique. Gold indices and hands in satin finish create a precise visual contrast against the urushi black. Caliber 6R5H, 72-hour power reserve. LWG-certified oil leather strap. Releasing September 5, 2026.

Key Features:

  • Echizen Urushi Lacquer Dial — Tamura Isshu, Tsuji Toshikazu & Tsuji Mitsuki: The urushi lacquer dial is produced through the traditional 塗りと研ぎ (nuri to togi) process — layers of lacquer applied, left to cure, then polished back, repeated until the surface achieves the characteristic depth of urushi black. Supervised by Tamura Isshu, one of Japan's most internationally acclaimed lacquer artists and a master of Kaga Makie fine-detail technique. Produced by Tsuji Toshikazu — a craftsman who fuses Echizen's ancient lacquer heritage with original techniques — and Tsuji Mitsuki, who combines Echizen tradition with Kaga Makie precision. The lacquer sourced from the Echizen region of Fukui Prefecture — one of Japan's oldest lacquerware production centres, with approximately 1,500 years of continuous history.
  • Gold Indices & Satin-Finish Hands — The Contrast of Urushi: Gold-coloured indices and satin-finished hands are placed on the urushi black to create a precise visual contrast that demonstrates the lacquer surface's depth. The Laurel-heritage index and dial layout are incorporated, connecting this dial to Seiko's 1913 origin story while expressing it in one of Japan's most ancient and distinguished craft traditions.
  • New Thin-Bezel Case — Maximising the Lacquer Surface: The thin-bezel case design minimises visual interruption between the crystal and the dial, allowing the urushi surface to dominate the watch face. 39.6mm diameter, 12.4mm thick. Standard stainless steel case, dual-curve sapphire crystal with inner AR coating.
  • Caliber 6R5H — 72-Hour Power Reserve: 24 jewels, ~72hr power reserve, automatic with hand-winding, hacking seconds, 21,600 vph. LWG-certified oil-tanned leather strap.
