"Attack on Titan" and traditional Japanese crafts
The world of "Attack on Titan" is expressed using the traditional Japanese craft "Awa Washi" on a made-in-Japan wristwatch.
What is Awa Washi?
This is a traditional Japanese paper made in Tokushima Prefecture, Awa Province, which boasts a history of 1300 years.
It has a unique texture, is durable and water-resistant, and is also used for interior decoration.
With the full cooperation of "Awagami Factory," which protects the traditions of Awa Washi, the cracked texture of the work's logo has been reproduced with washi paper on the dial and strap.
Details
Awa Washi
This is washi paper made using traditional methods in Yoshinogawa City, Naka Town, Naka District, and Ikeda Town, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, formerly known as the Province of Awa.
Its history dates back 1,300 years, and traditions have woven through the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.
In 1970, it was designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Tokushima Prefecture, and in 1976, it was designated a Traditional Craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
It has the feel and texture you can only get from handmade paper, and is characterized by its water-resistant, thin, tear-resistant, and durable quality.
Taking advantage of these characteristics, it is also used for interior decoration and other purposes.
Asarakusui paper
We have adopted asarakusui paper, which has a unique look among other types of washi paper.
It is made by incorporating a generous amount of hemp fibers and spraying water onto it to create holes that create a distinctive pattern.
Awagami Factory
Awa Washi is a brand with 1300 years of history.
Not only do we preserve and pass on the traditional culture of washi, but as creators of new materials, we are liberating washi from the world of "tradition" and disseminating the appeal of washi while developing various techniques and researching materials.
How washi paper is made
Introducing the traditional method of making washi paper
1. Boiling
The raw materials, such as kozo, are soaked in water to soften them, and then boiled in an alkaline solution for over two hours. They become tugable and tearable when pulled with your fingers.
2. Beating
The raw materials are beaten to separate the fibers one by one.
3. Papermaking
The sugeta is moved rhythmically to distribute the fibers evenly. The fibers are then entangled by repeating the process. The number of times and the method of movement affect the thickness and type of paper.
4. Pressing
Pressure is applied to the paper bed, which is a pile of wet paper, to dehydrate it.
This takes more than six hours to avoid damaging the layers of paper.
5. Drying
Each piece is attached to a drying board and dried in the sun or in a steam dryer to complete the process.
Assembling the watch
A mechanical watch is assembled by a watchmaker
The completed dial is finished at a domestic factory.
Nationally qualified watchmakers assemble each watch with the utmost care.
The assembled watches undergo strict quality control checks, such as waterproofing and operation checks, before being delivered to customers.
