It is built up through successive layers of lacquer application and polishing — 塗りと研ぎ (nuri to togi), applied and polished, applied and polished again, until the surface achieves the specific depth and sheen that only urushi can produce. The result is a black that is not flat but infinite — a surface that seems to recede behind the glass, drawing the eye inward. Supervised by lacquer artist Tamura Isshu — creator of the world's finest Kaga Makie lacquerwork, whose techniques appear on luxury fountain pens and watches globally — and produced by Echizen lacquer craftsmen Tsuji Toshikazu and Tsuji Mitsuki, who combine Echizen's 1,500-year-old lacquer tradition with Tamura's precision Kaga Makie technique.
